Coach Chris Beard of the Texas men’s basketball team was detained and accused of assault.

Chris Beard, the men’s basketball coach at the University of Texas, was taken into custody early on Monday morning on suspicion of felony domestic abuse.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office reported that Beard, 49, had been charged with third-degree assault on a family or household member and restricting breath circulation.

At 12:15 in the morning, Austin Police received a Priority 1 “disturbance hot shot report,” a representative for the department told Yahoo Sports. Officers were then called to a residence in Tarrytown, a posh area of Austin close to the UT campus, which is located on the 1900 block of Vista Lane.

Hot shot calls are described as “incidents that are in progress and pose an imminent threat to life and/or public safety” on the Austin Police Emergency Communications website. The phrase “that have recently occurred and the offender is still in the neighbourhood” refers to priority 1 calls.

According to the Travis County Tax Office, Baseline Group LLC is identified as the current owner of a house in the 1900 block of Vista Lane. OpenCorporates lists Christopher Beard as the organization’s leader.

As per Kristen Dark, senior public information officer for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Beard was still in custody in the Travis County jail as of 11 a.m. EST. Since Beard had not yet met with the magistrate judge, no bail had been set.

The University of Texas indicated in a statement that it is aware of the situation. “The University is aware of Chris Beard’s position. We’re still gathering data and keeping an eye on the legal system “The declaration said.

49-year-old Beard is in his second campaign as Texas’ head coach. The Longhorns are 7-1, are now rated No. 2 in the nation, and will host Rice on Monday night.

Last season, Beard guided Texas to a 22-12 record and an NCAA tournament second-round exit. Former Texas Tech and Arkansas-Little Rock coaches Beard.
